A United Airlines flight had to make an unexpected return to its original airport after a “foul smell” permeated the airplane's cabin. This scenario ranks as absolutely one of my worst fears, similar to that incident in 2023 when diarrhea “dribbled down the aisle” on a Delta Airlines flight.
Personally, I am extremely sensitive to odors, especially unpleasant ones!!! I absolutely detest those moments when I'm strolling through Sydney CBD and suddenly catch a whiff of some unidentifiable, unpleasant smell. It's such a mood killer.
Thus, this tale of a “foul smell” inside an airplane has my stomach turning.
According to The US Sun, the pilots of United Airlines flight 59 — bound from Frankfurt to San Francisco — had to reverse course after a revolting odor seeped into the cabin's environment.
The report states that once the Boeing 777 departed from Frankfurt airport, passengers began to complain about a “foul” odor emanating from the plane's restroom.
The German outlet Bild noted that after the cabin crew investigated the smell, they discovered that one of the aircraft's toilets was malfunctioning. Furthermore, it was mentioned that the plane's waste tank contents had “overflowed” into the passenger cabin.
Honestly, no thanks, mate. I'd rather walk!!
In an attempt to resolve the smelly issue, the aircraft reportedly contacted ground engineers for assistance. While awaiting a solution, the flight circled over the North Sea.
When they couldn't find a remedy for the unpleasant odor, the plane ultimately returned to Frankfurt.

If I were a passenger on this ill-fated flight, I wholeheartedly agree that returning would be the best course of action. Who would want to remain trapped in a SMELLY airplane? There's literally no escape.
In a statement to The US Sun, a spokesperson for United Airlines confirmed that the flight returned to its original airport due to issues with the aircraft’s lavatory.
“On Friday, March 29, United Flight 59 returned to Frankfurt following a maintenance issue with one of the aircraft’s lavatories,” the spokesperson stated.
The spokesperson also mentioned to the publication that all passengers received hotel accommodations and were rebooked on another flight the following day.
This story of the odorous aircraft closely resembles another instance when a Delta Airlines Airbus flight had to be canceled mid-journey after a passenger reportedly suffered from diarrhea throughout the airplane.
During that incident, Delta confirmed that flight DL194 was canceled due to a “medical issue”.
“Our teams worked as quickly and safely as possible to thoroughly clean the airplane and get our customers to their final destination,” the airline said in a statement to Insider.
“We sincerely apologize to our customers for the delay and inconvenience to their travel plans.”
That’s an experience I wouldn't wish on anyone, not even my worst enemy.
Wherever that passenger is now, I hope they’re doing well!
