What springs to mind when you hear the name Martha Stewart?
If you’re a culinary enthusiast, you’ll likely think of her impressive cooking prowess, with a vast array of recipes crafted to satisfy even the most selective palates.
If you’re frequently online (like me), you might associate her with Snoop Dogg. The duo first crossed paths in 2008 when Snoop appeared on Martha’s show (appropriately named The Martha Stewart Show), but it was the notorious roast of Justin Bieber in 2015 that solidified their friendship as a pop culture phenomenon. (Martha later confessed she experienced a contact high from sitting next to Snoop, which is quite the bonding experience, if you ask me.)
In essence: Martha Stewart is captivating. She’s transformed from the quintessential homemaker to Snoop's best friend, famously jesting at the Bieber roast that among all the rappers on stage, she’d “served the most jail time”. Last year’s Netflix documentary only reinforced her status in the pop culture zeitgeist.
So when the opportunity to interview the icon herself arose, we seized it. Curious about what the world’s savviest businesswoman has to share about career advice? Keep reading, friends.
Keep it fun and funky
When asked for guidance on what young individuals should do when navigating their future, Martha was quick to respond. Fun takes center stage.
“I like to have a good time. I’m finally becoming recognized for having a wonderful sense of humor. People used to think I was just a straight-laced middle-class lady, but now they’re realizing that I actually possess a sense of humor, and I enjoy laughing. Who would’ve thought?” Martha shares with PEDESTRIAN.TV.
Most importantly, however, ensure you’re knowledgeable. This holds true for whatever you choose to pursue.
“Learn everything you can about the topic at hand. Ask yourself: do people need it? Do people want it? Will it be an essential part of living?” Martha advises.
“All of these questions must be answered before you dedicate your time to it. That approach has worked for me, and it’s always enjoyable. Most [of the things] I’ve attempted have been successful and valuable ventures.”
Don’t knock it ‘til you try it
Ah, trying new things. Is it a cliché? Absolutely. Is it true? Yes indeed.
When it comes to herself, Martha is no stranger to an unconventional business venture or two.
“I have the Martha Stewart brand, which encompasses housewares, bedding, bath, holiday products, the whole spectrum,” Martha explains.
“Beyond that, I love exploring new ventures. Fragrance is one of them. [I’ve also been] eager to design a car. I would love to create a practical family car. I haven’t begun yet, but I have countless ideas about it.”
You heard it here first, folks. Martha Stewart is eager to design a car.
“I basically have to live in a car. I commute frequently, and I spend a lot of time in a car [often]. So I want it to be the best car possible,” Martha states.
She might have gained fame as the so-called perfect homemaker, but she embraces the absurd, the daring, and the downright internet quirks.
Consider her collaboration with Rexona (yes, the deodorant brand) for example, which involved creating an ad campaign designed to make your most elevated friend say “huh?”
“When I was 15, I participated in a commercial in New York for a full body deodorant soap, and I thought it was such a humorous coincidence to do something similar so many years later,” Martha says of the unexpected collaboration, which from her perspective, aligned perfectly.
“I was also curious about what a full body deodorant spray was like. So I discovered it. It’s not sticky, it’s not greasy, it just [kind of] absorbs.”
Gimmie the (Snoop) tea
Mad Stoner Energy and Snoop Dogg are synonymous, but from a business standpoint? The dude’s got guts.
The pair have been friends for over 15 years, initially meeting to make mashed potatoes together on The Martha Stewart Show. Since then, they have hosted comedy and cooking shows together and indulged in plenty of baking.
“He’s tough. You wouldn’t guess that from the laid-back, marijuana-loving guy you see, with his head wrapped in a cloth, sunglasses, and plenty of dangling jewelry. But he is a truly savvy businessman,” Martha remarks.
“We’ll receive an offer for something, and he’ll decline. They’ll propose a substantial amount, yet still, no. He has a specific number in mind, and it’s either that or nothing. The journey to that number is immensely enjoyable for him.”
Snoop being quite stringent might be unexpected, but you know what isn’t? His insatiable munchies.
“I’m not a big snacker, but Snoop is. Snoop has all of the snacks.”
