Australia has united with 24 other nations to officially criticize Israel for the deaths of hundreds of Palestinians in Gaza, who perished while attempting to obtain desperately needed food and medical assistance. The coalition is urging Israel to allow the entry of humanitarian supplies and is calling for an immediate cessation of hostilities.

The statement, which was issued on Monday night, includes signatures from Foreign Minister Penny Wong and ministers from the UK, France, Canada, among others.

“The plight of civilians in Gaza has reached unprecedented levels. The Israeli government’s method of delivering aid is perilous, promotes instability, and strips Gazans of their human dignity,” the statement declared.

“We denounce the gradual distribution of aid and the inhumane killing of civilians, including children, who are striving to meet their most fundamental need for water and food. It is appalling that over 800 Palestinians have lost their lives while seeking aid.”

As reported by the UN Human Rights Council, nearly 900 individuals have died while trying to obtain food at distribution centers in Gaza, with many fatalities occurring near facilities managed by the Gaza Humanitarian Foundation, the primary aid organization following the UN Network's replacement. The situation deteriorated further after an aid blockade was imposed in March, subsequent to the collapse of a ceasefire in January.

Home Affairs Minister Tony Burke spoke on ABC News Breakfast, describing the situation in Gaza as “indefensible,” and stated, “We’ve witnessed far too many images of children being killed, horrific violence, and churches being bombed.

“The images we've seen unmistakably show that much of this is indefensible… what we are observing on the other side of the world is indefensible… the war must end.”

However, Wong’s statement has sparked controversy. Opposition frontbencher Jonathon Duniam described the government’s decision to sign the letter as “a rather alarming move” on Sky News this morning, claiming it “ignores the origins of this conflict on October 7” when militants led by Hamas killed over 1,200 people in Israel.

Sussan Ley, Deputy Opposition Leader, also emphasized that while aid is crucial, Hamas must release all hostages to help resolve the crisis.

In contrast, Greens leader Larissa Waters has called for Australia to “do more” and consider sanctions, arguing that mere words are insufficient.

It's evident that the daily reality in Gaza is dire. According to Gaza's health ministry, over 59,000 Palestinians have been killed since October 7, and movement remains severely restricted as the conflict continues. Tens of thousands have been displaced, struggling to access essentials like water and food.

The new international statement not only emphasizes aid but also condemns violent settlement expansion in the West Bank and criticizes proposals to forcibly relocate Palestinians into a so-called “humanitarian city”.

“Permanent forced displacement is a violation of international humanitarian law,” the joint statement asserted.

Israel’s foreign ministry dismissed the allegations, labeling the joint statement with Australia and others as “disconnected from reality” and maintaining that “Hamas is solely responsible for the ongoing war and suffering on both sides.”

Israel contends that the real issue is Hamas’ refusal to accept ceasefires and their alleged misappropriation of aid supplies — accusations that Hamas has denied.

Efforts for a ceasefire have thus far been fruitless, and international attempts to halt the violence have not yielded a breakthrough. Nonetheless, the 25 countries, including Australia, declare their readiness to “take further action to support an immediate ceasefire and a political pathway to security and peace for Israelis, Palestinians, and the entire region.”
