Two Aussies Were On Board The Gaza-Bound Handala Aid Ship Seized By Israeli Forces

Earlier today, two Australians were reportedly aboard a civilian aid ship bound for Gaza that was seized by Israeli forces (local time).

The Handala flotilla was believed to be transporting activists and aid supplies, including baby formula, diapers, food, and medicine intended for Palestinians in Gaza, as the region continues to face a significant hunger crisis

As per reports, the ship was intercepted by Israeli forces approximately 70 nautical miles from its target destination. A YouTube livestream of the journey showed armed personnel boarding the vessel while passengers raised their hands in surrender.

The livestream concluded shortly after a helmeted crew member seemed to redirect the camera away from the deck.

In a statement on X, Israel’s foreign ministry confirmed that its navy had “stopped the vessel” from “entering the maritime zone off the coast of Gaza”.

“The vessel is safely on its way to the shores of Israel. All passengers are unharmed,” the post stated.

Meanwhile, Freedom Flotilla — the group behind the fleet — stated that Handala was “forcefully intercepted by the Israeli military in international waters”.

“The interception took place in international waters, outside the Palestinian territorial waters off Gaza, contravening international maritime law,” the statement highlighted.

The flotilla carried 21 civilians from 12 different countries, including journalist and activist Tania Safi and human rights advocate Robert Martin

Prior to the interception, Safi mentioned in a statement to CNN that “everyone here has been preparing for almost every possible scenario that Israel might subject us to”.

“If they intercept us, it would breach international maritime law.”

In a pre-recorded message shared following the interception, Safi urged “the immediate release of everyone on board the Handala”.

This marks the second maritime interception by Israeli forces in recent months, with the Madleen, also operated by Freedom Flotilla, being seized as well, with Greta Thunberg among the passengers.

According to Al-Jazeera, the status of the passengers on board Handala remains uncertain. However, a representative from Australia’s Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade stated they were aware two Australians were on the vessel and were coordinating with authorities.

“Consular officers are prepared to provide assistance to affected Australians,” the spokesperson mentioned, according to The Guardian.

This situation is still evolving.
