Travis Kelce had home-field advantage when asking the big question to Taylor Swift.
The Kansas City Chiefs tight end proposed to his pop superstar girlfriend in Lee's Summit, Missouri, according to his father Ed Kelce, who shared the news in a Wednesday interview with News 5's John Kosich.
The elder Kelce, joking that he wasn’t sure how much he should reveal but didn’t mind, said the engagement happened two weeks ago in a garden in Lee's Summit, a suburb of the Kansas City metro area.
"He was going to wait until this week," Kelce told News 5, adding that his son originally planned to make the proposal a "grand thing" and a "big special event."
He explained that he told his son multiple times he could propose on the "side of the road" and it would still be meaningful.
According to him, Travis brought Swift to the garden while they were on their way to dinner, telling her they would have a glass of wine there, before getting down on one knee.
In Swift's Instagram announcement, the couple appeared in a lush garden surrounded by flowers.
Lee's Summit, home to about 106,000 residents, is less than 20 miles away from Leawood, Kansas, where Kelce owns a $6 million mansion.
Ed Kelce shared with News 5 that he was at a Philadelphia Eagles public practice when he received the news from the couple.
"I got a FaceTime call from them. The moment I saw it was Travis, and then Taylor with him, I knew exactly what they were about to say," he recalled.
He explained that he knew months ago they would eventually get engaged, as it was "clear they were absolutely crazy about each other."
The couple began dating in 2023. They have been very public with their relationship, with Kelce attending several of Swift's concerts and Swift cheering him on at his games.
Kelce proposed with a ring that, according to a jewelry expert consulted by Business Insider, features a 9-carat diamond estimated to be worth about $1 million.
Swift, who is preparing to release her latest album, "The Life of a Showgirl," on October 3, has a reported net worth of \$1.6 billion, according to Forbes.
Representatives for both Swift and Kelce did not provide comments to Business Insider.
