Novak Djokovic Slams Injury "Experts" After Australian Open Exit

There has been considerable discussion surrounding Novak Djokovic’s unexpected departure from the Australian Open, and it appears that the 24-time Grand Slam champion isn’t taking it lightly.

In an unfortunate turn on Friday, Djokovic left the court amidst a chorus of boos after withdrawing from his match with Alexander Zverev post one set. He later clarified that he had been contending with a muscle tear since his prior victory over Carlos Alcaraz.

“I did everything I possibly could to manage the muscle tear that I had,” Djokovic stated at a post-match conference, according to ABC News.

“Towards the end of that first set, I started feeling more and more pain. It was just too much to handle at that moment. It’s an unfortunate ending, but I tried.”

When questioned about the crowd’s reaction, Djokovic replied candidly: “I am doing my best to understand them, but I’m not sure if they understand me or even want to.

“I know my body, what I feel, and how much I’ve contributed to this tournament over the past 20-plus years. I will stop here to avoid speaking in the wrong direction.”

Despite the boos, the situation didn’t end there, as accusations and questions arose over the weekend, suggesting he may have exaggerated his injury.

Taking matters into his own hands, Djokovic decided to address his critics through a post on X (formerly Twitter) on Saturday.

“Thought I’d leave this here for all the sports injury ‘experts’ out there,” he wrote, alongside a photo of an MRI scan.

However, he refrained from providing additional details about the injury or when he might return to the court.

His post garnered a wave of support, with one fan commenting: “Novak, you don’t owe any of our haters and doubters a response. Those who matter know you are the biggest fighter in tennis and put your heart and soul into every match.”

“You don’t have to explain yourself again and again, champ! You’ll always be the GOAT,” another user expressed.

UK tennis blogger Pavvy G also echoed this sentiment, stating he was proud of the tennis star for countering “all the false narratives.”

As reported by the Sydney Morning Herald, Zverev also addressed those who booed Djokovic during his on-court interview on Friday.

“I understand that everyone paid for tickets and hopes to witness a thrilling five-set match,” Zverev remarked.

“However, you must realize — Novak Djokovic has dedicated the last 20 years of his life to this sport.

“He has won this tournament with an abdominal tear, he’s won it with a hamstring injury. If he cannot continue a tennis match, he cannot continue. Please, show some respect.”

Zverev is scheduled to compete against Jannik Sinner in the men’s final at the Australian Open this evening.
