In a delightful twist of events, Charli xcx has sparked rumors of a potential trip to Australia by incorporating an iconic soundbite from Kath and Kim in her latest TikTok video.
On Wednesday, the pop sensation shared a TikTok recorded backstage during the Chicago stop of her joint Sweat tour with Troye Sivan. While this may seem typical, the video caught the attention of Australian fans as it featured a quote from the beloved sitcom’s very first episode.
“I’m very proud of how I look,” Charli confidently lip-syncs in the clip. “Yes I am high maintenance, but I think you gotta be.” That quote deserves a spot in the Louvre alongside a statue of little baby cheeses.
Putting aside the fact that, by their very essence, Kath and Kim are the epitome of brat (a petition for their appearance on the remix album starts now), Charli’s use of the distinctly Australian sound is being seen as a hint that she will tour the country, possibly as part of the 2024 Laneway Festival lineup.
Charli's nod to these two Aussie icons — who rank alongside Bunnings sausage sizzles and clothesline goon sacks — aligns with a brat-green billboard emblazoned with the word “Laneway” that appeared on Australian streets on Wednesday.
Reportedly located in Sydney’s Marrickville, the poster is styled exactly like the now-iconic brat album cover (green is the new black), providing fans with all the confirmation they need to crown Charli as Laneway’s 2024 headliner.
Of course, it might just be that Charli is a dedicated Kath and Kim fan like the rest of us (moisyelf included), and that the Aussie billboard was merely replicated by a fan à la Crumbl Cookies. But where’s the fun in that?
For what it’s worth, we’ll at least enjoy one half of the Sweat tour with Sivan’s series of solo Aussie shows set for November. However, we won’t know for certain whether his co-headliner will perform at Laneway until the official lineup is revealed on October 9.
Until then, I’m diving into my eleventh hundredth rewatch of Kath and Kim, still dreaming of finding a partner like Kel.
