There’s no denying that Troye Sivan's recent album, Something To Give Each Other, is brimming with hits. This collection of tracks earned Sivan three ARIA Awards, including Solo Artist Of The Year and Album Of The Year. Yet, the compelling story behind the album is what truly gives it that unique je ne sais quoi.
When Troye Sivan graced the 2024 ARIA Awards stage to accept Album Of The Year, the “Rush” singer disclosed that his award-winning album Something To Give Each Other was fueled not only by “moments between lockdown in Melbourne” and his breakup but also by a significant one-night stand.
“Quick story. I was going through the breakup, really really depressed, and I meet this one guy I have this one night stand with him,” Sivan began.

“We had this incredible, incredible connection and I’m like, oh my god, I thought the connection could only look like one thing, you know? And then I started to realise how many people there are in the world and how incredible connections of all kinds can feel and how they can manifest in so many different ways.
“It’s super weird, but I wrote this album basically about this random stranger I never saw again.”
While you might assume the story ends there, the plot actually thickens…

“Until, I was sitting at a wine bar in Melbourne and I see him and he randomly came up,” Sivan continued, admitting that he forgot the man's name during their unexpected encounter.
“The crazy thing is, I said to him, ‘Can I say something’ — the album is out at this point, you know it’s going really well — I said to him, ‘Just so you know it’s about you. You sorta started me on this thing.’ And he looked really confused.”

In a surprising plot twist, Sivan then revealed that the mysterious hook-up mentioned how the album, Something To Give Each Other, was helping him through his own recent breakup. Mind-blowing.
“Music is really really cool. Go have a one-night stand with someone. You never know what could happen,” Sivan chuckled before concluding his speech.
With the former YouTuber sharing this remarkable piece of lore, it’s no wonder I am so captivated by this album.
