Ever since the newest episode of The Summer I Turned Pretty season three was released, fans on social media have been humorously critiquing the minuscule engagement ring that Jeremiah (Gavin Casalegno) used to propose to Belly (Lola Tung). While the online banter has been absolutely entertaining, the show's creator and its stars have mixed feelings about the conversation.
If you haven’t caught up with what everyone is buzzing about, here’s the scoop. In episode two, Jeremiah went down on one knee to propose to Belly in her cozy college dorm room. Despite presenting an incredibly tiny diamond on an ultra-thin band, Belly accepted the proposal.
In episode three, the newly engaged couple is now wrestling with the decision of whether or not to inform their families. Eventually, they do when Belly dramatically reveals the barely-there ring as a defiant gesture towards Jeremiah’s father Adam (Tom Everett Scott), who is subtly being unkind to Jeremiah.
Unsurprisingly, when people on social media noticed the miniature ring, they had plenty to say.
the music 😭 and the way she proudly shows off a ring that can’t be seen 😭😭#TheSummerITurnedPretty

Despite the general consensus that the ring is underwhelming, creator Jenny Han believes the uproar is somewhat exaggerated.
“I think it’s a little much,” Han shared with PEDESTRIAN.TV.
“It’s personally cracking me up,” Rain Spencer, who plays Taylor, added with a laugh.
“It’s very, very funny,” Han admitted, but she also pointed out that choosing a smaller, more affordable ring was a “responsible” decision, as it prevented the characters from overspending on the ring.

In spite of the widespread criticism, the series’ lead Lola Tung stands by the ring.
“I love that ring though,” Tung expressed sincerely. “I think it’s so them. They’re young and… Jeremiah has already put his father in debt. Also, I find it beautiful.
“It’s small, but it’s practical and I think it’s beautiful. However, [the jokes online] are indeed funny.”
The actual ring featured in the series is named the Diamond Fizz Ring, Sparkler from the jewelry brand Catbird NYC, which collaborated with Prime Video for the release of The Summer I Turned Pretty‘s third season.
The ring is priced at a modest $298 AUD. While I don’t advocate the outdated tradition of spending one to three months’ salary on an engagement ring, I do feel Jeremiah could have perhaps added another hundred or two for a slightly larger stone.
Alternatively, he might have used the $298 to fund a romantic dinner, a weekend getaway, or even a couple of therapy sessions.

Personally, I think while the ring might be small compared to the general population’s dream proposal, the hint of a diamond on it is perfectly suited for Belly and Jeremiah. They’re both young and optimistic, with their frontal cortexes still developing. We all understand this engagement is a bit of a whirlwind — especially considering he’s cheated on her twice!
Hypothetically speaking, if their relationship did endure, I believe there’s something special about the ring evolving over time and growing with them. After all, as Tung mentioned in our interview, “it’s not about the material things, you know?”
The Summer I Turned Pretty season three is releasing one episode per week on Prime Video. You can check out our full interview with Jenny Han, Lola Tung, and Rain Spencer below.
