A student from a Sydney university appeared in court after police allegedly found tens of thousands of child abuse images and videos on his mobile device.

The NSW Police reported that the 35-year-old individual was apprehended on Monday afternoon at a university campus in Randwick, as part of an ongoing investigation known as Strike Force Glandore. This taskforce was established by the Sex Crimes Squad’s Child Internet Exploitation Unit with the aim of targeting the online distribution and possession of child abuse material.

Sydney Morning Herald states that the individual – identified as Ali Alghamdi – was a student at the University of New South Wales.

Officers took Alghamdi into custody shortly after 3pm. When detectives examined his phone, they claim to have discovered more than 25,000 illegal images and videos. Among these, it’s reported that 42 were marked as “favourites”.

In an official statement, NSW Police mentioned: “During a search of the individual’s phone, police allegedly located over 25,000 videos and images of child abuse material, including 42 marked as favourites.”

The individual was transported to Maroubra Police Station, where he faced charges for accessing child abuse material via a carriage service.

According to the police, he was denied bail and was scheduled to appear in Waverley Local Court today, Tuesday, 29 July 2025.

The investigation by Strike Force Glandore remains ongoing.
