If you’re reading this, I want you to know that I have a strong dislike for you. Okay, maybe "hate" is too harsh a term, but I’m definitely envious of you and your urgent need for numerous last-minute travel essentials. While you’re off to enjoy a delightful European summer, a tropical getaway, a Japanese adventure, or a party in the USA, I’m here shivering under 15 million layers, enduring the depths of Melbourne’s winter.

That said, I’m a shopping editor. I have a role to fulfill and knowledge to share. Last year, I spent six weeks exploring the sun-drenched Mediterranean and discovered some fantastic travel essentials I wouldn’t have thought of before embarking on a long-haul flight.

From multi-purpose chargers to in-flight skincare, there are a few items that will significantly enhance your travel experience — especially if you’re flying economy class.

1. Luggage That Charges Your Phone

In my opinion, this is an essential travel item, even if it’s just for the simplicity it offers. How often have you needed your phone only to find it dead, leading you to frantically search through your bag for a portable charger and cord? Smart luggage is the solution, offering a carry-on suitcase with an ejectable battery. I’m a fan of this one from July, as it’s approved for any flight worldwide and comes equipped with USB-C docks to charge both your phone and laptop.

2. A Good Travel Hairdryer

I got this ghd travel hairdryer a year ago, and it has become a travel essential for me. Most travel hairdryers lack power, but this one performs brilliantly. Plus, it’s lightweight and folds away compactly. It’s worth every penny.

3. A Durable Toiletries Bag

It’s time to toss that old, dirty toiletries bag covered in toothpaste and grime and invest in a sleek new one that can handle being tossed around and crammed into your suitcase in a last-minute rush. You could opt for a sturdy option like this Country Road cosmetic case, or if you prefer to see all your items at a glance, this Prene clear case set is perfect.

4. A Toothbrush Lid or Cover

Your toothbrush is often one of the last items you pack before leaving for a trip, and chances are, you’ve tossed it into your toiletries bag in a rush. To that, I say gross. Cover your toothbrush. Amazon offers a range of options, from lids for just the tip (hehe) to full protector covers.

5. A Light-But-Tough Suitcase

One thing we all dread when we travel is how heavy our suitcase might be at the check-in counter. It’s surprising how heavy some suitcases are, taking up a significant portion of your luggage allowance. I swear by my American Tourister Airconic, which is incredibly lightweight at just 3.2kgs without sacrificing quality. If you’re looking to go even lighter, Samsonite offers a check-in suitcase weighing only 2.5kgs!

6. A Laptop Sleeve

I will never carry a laptop bag onto a plane — I already have a handbag and carry-on to manage through customs and the narrow aisle. I’m not adding another item. This year, I’m planning to get a good laptop sleeve like Orbit Key’s, which doubles as a portable desk mat and mouse pad when unfolded.
