10 Thoughts I Had While Living My Best Love Island Bombshell Life In Fiji

As the sole daughter in a strict Filipino household, the idea of solo traveling was a dream I thought I'd have to chase in another life. But, after some major persuasion (essentially buying tickets and informing the 'rents just a month before departure), Fiji became my inaugural destination as a single queen.

Now, as I unpack and reflect, and re-immerse myself into work, I'd love to share the ten insights I gained from my maiden solo journey to the South Pacific.

Typically, when people think of Fiji, it's often associated with honeymooners, families, and retirees rather than solo adventurers. And I won't lie, those were indeed the main groups I noticed while boarding the plane.

Yet, as someone who lives life through screens, I was craving a digital detox, and Fiji fit the bill, even for a solo traveler like me. However, after experiencing this tropical paradise, I discovered that Fiji offers much more than just a haven for those three groups...

Spoiler alert: it's an ideal spot for solo adventurers seeking a tropical retreat.

10. Come on, Bek. Channel your inner Charli XCX and “Talk Talk”.

Coming from a city like Sydney where Tall Poppy Syndrome is prevalent, striking up conversations with strangers was initially intimidating for the first... hour.

Now, I'll admit that I'm naturally chatty—which is why I made a career out of it—but even so, engaging with strangers was somewhat daunting, especially when they were already in groups or couples.

Yet, after bonding over some frozen margaritas and some entertainment gossip, it became easy, and the conversations rewarded me with incredible stories, life lessons, travel tips, and wonderful friendships.

And of course, for those moments of cherished solitude, I found solace in a book (barely cracked open) and my headphones.

But ultimately, the highlight of this trip was the meaningful connections I forged. Special shout out to Lemba at Nuku in the Hilton and Chubz, you’re the real MVPs!

9. It’s okay to spend a day doing nothing.

As a self-proclaimed workaholic, I often feel a tinge of guilt when taking a break—especially when Logies and Sydney Sweeney are trending with juicy updates.

However, as soon as the island breeze hit me while I lounged on that sunbed, the workaholic in me vanished. I spent many days by the pool, beach, or on excursions, and though work lingered in my mind, it was refreshing to log out for a bit.

And as many of my newfound friends in Fiji reminded me, when you're on island time, relaxation is mandatory!

8. Thank god you booked those excursions in early.

While I'm not typically the Type A traveler, booking excursions early is always a wise move.

Reserving excursions in advance not only prevents the disappointment of sold-out dates but also helps organize the rest of the trip. When you're solo, you're solo, and you need to have your plans in place to make it work.

Plus, pre-booking gives you something exciting to look forward to during the trip!

To share my personal experience, I booked months in advance and yes, I am that persistent customer who constantly checks and confirms with the organizer regarding hotel pickups, drop-offs, and confirmations.

Among the excursions, the snorkelling with sharks at Barefoot Kuata Island Resort was unforgettable.
